Resistance Weld 12mil Stainless Steel Strain Gauge to Thick Steel Plate

System 1:
CD200SPM, 200ws capacitive discharge resistance welder
PASP, pressure actuated single probe hand piece
1/8” copper electrode with tip tapered to 1/16”
6awg Weld Cables

The PASP-HP hand piece is pressure actuated (as pressure is applied, a signal is sent to the welder to initiate welds). Spring pressure is adjustable and we set it at the maximum applicable force. An alligator grounding clip is attached to the bare steel. 6awg weld cables are used and the electrode is 1/8” copper with a tip that is tapered down to 1/16”. It is helpful to ensure that the weld surface is clean and free of coating or rust prior to performing the welds.

The strain gauges are welded using the CD200SPM set at 200ws energy. This setting produces good weld nugget sizes and a pull test shows flagging of the material. 1awg weld cables could yield even stronger results. We also offer the CD400DP if higher pull strength, larger nuggets, or increased penetration is required.

The CD200SPM is an economical solution that will provide consistent weld quality. The PASP hand piece can quickly and easily place welds and no secondary trigger is required. I would have no hesitation recommending System 1.
